Find Lincoln County Traffic Tickets

Start with the ticket itself. It tells you whether your Lincoln County traffic ticket belongs to Magistrate Court or to a municipal court, and the clerk for that court keeps the record. A Lincoln County traffic ticket lookup works with a name, a case number, or the citation number printed on the paper. State-law charges usually land in Magistrate Court, while town ordinance cases stay with the municipal court that issued them. The clerk can confirm where your case sits and what options you have for paying or contesting the citation.

Lincoln County Traffic Court Records

Most state-law traffic citations in Lincoln County get filed in Lincoln County Magistrate Court. The court sits at 8000 Court Avenue in Hamlin. Magistrate Clerk Lori Whitten takes mail at P.O. Box 573, Hamlin, WV 25523. The listed clerk line is 304-824-7999, extension 235. Magistrate staff also use extensions 236 and 237. A traffic docket can show the charge and filings. It also lists the plea, hearing dates, continuances, judgment, and payment entries.

Hamlin and West Hamlin run their own courts for municipal ordinance cases. Neither town posts an online docket, calendar, or payment portal. The citation names the court that controls. A magistrate conviction or appeal can later generate entries in Circuit Court. The Lincoln County Circuit Clerk keeps those records.

Lincoln Magistrate Is the Start

Traffic violations under West Virginia law start in Magistrate Court in the usual Lincoln County route. Magistrate Criminal Rule 7 allows a citation for qualifying misdemeanors in the motor-vehicle and natural-resources chapters. Statutory exceptions apply. That is why a roadside citation becomes a court case. It never touches a Circuit docket first.

The West Virginia Judiciary Lincoln County directory lists local court contacts. Call the clerk when a citation has no online match. Call when the court name is hard to read, or when a scheduled hearing may have moved. A missing portal result is not a dismissal.

Routing rule: Start with the court printed on the ticket. Geography alone cannot show whether the charge is municipal or state law.

Looking Up a Traffic Ticket

Lincoln County offers a few access paths. The Magistrate Court Payment System searches exact identifiers and can filter by Lincoln County. MCRSearch pulls public Magistrate case information by first name, last name, or case number. It caps results at 30. It does not return case documents. The clerk can also check the case by phone or at the counter and explain how to request a paper copy.

  1. Read the issuing court and exact citation number.
  2. Try the payment search with the full Citation ID, Case ID, or Payment Plan ID.
  3. Use MCRSearch for Magistrate case information by name or case number.
  4. Select Lincoln County where the portal offers a county control.
  5. If no match appears, call or visit the named clerk and confirm the identifier and filing status.

A municipal ticket calls for the town first. Hamlin uses 304-824-5500. West Hamlin uses 304-824-3055. Ask whether the citation is an ordinance case or a state-law matter before picking a portal.

The payment site matches exact IDs, not broad names. Each number opens a different path. Keep leading zeroes and punctuation exactly as printed.

The search screen can error out on an incomplete identifier. MCRSearch works differently. It finds limited case information, while the payment site locates a bill or payment path by exact number.

How to Find Your Traffic Court Date

A date on a ticket is only the first lead. The live court docket should confirm it. Search the case, read the newest entry, then verify the setting with the Magistrate Clerk. A continuance means the court moved a hearing, not that the case ended. For municipal matters, confirm dates with the issuing town. Hamlin and West Hamlin post no public calendar.

DateThe date currently entered for the hearing or docket call.
TimeThe listed start time, which may apply to a group docket.
CourtMagistrate, municipal, or Circuit Court after an appeal.
Case NumberThe court identifier, which may differ from the citation ID.
Setting TypePlea, hearing, trial, compliance review, or another stated event.

The Lincoln County court dates overview shows how resets and settings appear across local courts. Confirm any change directly. Portal data can lag behind a court order or clerk entry.

Note: Bring the citation and identification if the clerk asks for an in-person check. Ask first about current counter procedures.

When a Lincoln Date Is Missed

Do not wait for the next portal update after a missed traffic setting. Contact the court on the citation right away. A failure to appear can add another docket entry. It may also trigger notice to the Division of Motor Vehicles under West Virginia procedure. The clerk can tell you what the record shows and whether the court issued a new setting or order. The clerk cannot give legal advice.

Missed setting: Call the named court promptly. An online blank does not cancel an order, warrant, fee, or DMV notice.

A Magistrate Court citation means using the Lincoln County clerk contacts. For a Hamlin or West Hamlin ordinance case, call the town office and ask for the current municipal-court channel. Write down whom you spoke with and the date.

Pay or Contest a Ticket

Paying and contesting are two different procedural choices. Magistrate rules allow a not-guilty plea to a traffic or natural-resources citation in person before a Magistrate in the county charged, or by mail to that county's Magistrate Court. The deadline printed on the citation controls; there is no single universal deadline for every ticket.

West Virginia law allows electronic payments, credit cards, cash, money orders, certified checks, and payment plans for Magistrate matters. The portal adds a $2 WV.gov service charge to an online payment. Do not assume payment posted just because a search turned up the case.

Lincoln Traffic Forms Have Limits

The Judiciary's Magistrate Court forms library offers a few traffic-related options. Motion to Dismiss Traffic Citation form SCA-M340NP is one. So are a request for deferral of DUI conviction and a refusal-review hearing request. Seeing a form in the library, though, does not mean you qualify for that relief. The forms page warns that they are not legal advice. They should not be altered beyond completion.

Traffic Court Record vs Driving Record

Keep two files straight. A traffic court docket lives at the courthouse. A driver record lives with the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles. The court file tracks the citation case and its judicial events, like hearings and filings. The DMV keeps the driver record. It runs its own administrative process once it receives qualifying notice.

A court disposition is one thing. A DMV action is another. Check each with the agency that owns that file.

No Town Ticket Portal

Neither Hamlin nor West Hamlin runs an online portal for municipal citations. You cannot check a court calendar there. You cannot pay a ticket through a town site either. That gap trips people up. A state Magistrate docket search will not show a charge filed under a town ordinance, so you can burn real time in the wrong system. Call the municipality named on the citation and ask which court channel it uses.

The Secretary of State municipal contacts page lists phone and office routes for each town government. It holds no docket data itself. A town may say the charge was filed under state law. Take that case to MCRSearch or the Magistrate clerk. An appeal that lands in Circuit Court moves to WVPASS and the Circuit Clerk.

Copies and Fees

What you see online is not a certified court record. MCRSearch is free, but it supplies no documents. Magistrate Administrative Rule 11 sets photocopies at $0.25 per page. Certification or postage may cost extra, so ask before sending payment. For an appealed traffic matter in Circuit Court, WVPASS public downloads cost $0.25 per page. Card processing adds a bit more.
